Membership

Our membership is drawn from various human rights organizations and other members of the civil society in Kenya. We have members who join by virtue of the organization that they work for such as national and international level human rights NGOs, members of community-based organizations, and individuals.

Traditionally, HURI SACCO has drawn its members from civil society organizations promoting Human Rights, Development and Good Governance in Eastern Africa. Thus, the membership mainly comprises employees of national and international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOS), and subnational human rights and good governance networks.

However, HURI SACCO also draws its membership from actors in government departments and agencies, the corporate sector, private practice and consulting, where such actors espouse and practice the ideals of Human Rights and Good Governance.

I joined HURI sometimes back in 2006 and for sure I have benefited a lot from the Sacco. I have benefited from education loans, development loans, and emergency loans among other products. I managed to complete my college studies well without so much hustle. My family has benefited from various loans up to today and I appreciate. I have also managed to buy myself a car from a HURI loan and looking forward to acquiring more property by the help of the Sacco’s loans. The best thing is that the loans don’t take long to be processed. The longest time I ever waited was one and a half weeks and the shortest time was three days. This cannot be compared with some Saccos who take even up to three months to have a loan approved.

" I have been a member of HURI SACCO for over 20 years now. Having joined in October 2001.I bought my first car, piece of land and now accumulating assets to avoid old age poverty through HURI SACCO. Looking back HURI SACCO membership is not all about money. It's a key pillar of the human rights movement in Kenya,At the service of the many soldiers; comrades in the movement, A space to support one another, fellowship, guide, mentor, find a shoulder to lean on, a ladder to climb on.Comrades in the struggle know that ours is a tough call; we oftentimes forget ourselves to fight for others. But through HURI we have a platform to take care of ourselves- to grow too.

Kiama

" My name is Mary Kambo. I joined HURI Sacco towards the end of 2015, barely one year after joining the Kenya Human Rights Commission. After two years of religiously saving with the Sacco, I took my first loan through which I supported my parents to acquire a parcel of land in the beautiful ridges of Maragua sub-county in Murang�a county. It took me a year of discipline and hard work to repay the loan after which I took a second; this time bigger, facility to begin constructing a house for my parents in 2018. Along the way, the money was depleted and yet the project was still incomplete. Having repaid the second loan substantially, I approached the Sacco for a top-up loan which was granted and processed seamlessly and within less than one week. Today, thanks to HURI Sacco, a towering 3-bedroom bungalow stands tall in the ridges of a quiet village in Maragua. My friend George Kegoro, the Director of Policy and Engagement at Open Society Foundations told me after I built the house, �Mary, what you have done is more than build a house for your parents. You have brought dignity to them.� If you know my background, you will appreciate that construction of this house is no mean feat and that it is a huge step towards bringing dignity to my parents. I must confess I would not have done it in the absence of a Sacco that cares, listens and is genuinely interested in the growth of its members.
